Fly Fishing Tips

I am writing a book, and part of the story involves an ice fishing trip in Minnesota, but I need to know if early to mid December is too early to ice fish. Living in Florida, I’m not that familiar with the fishing seasons up there. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I am currently in Rochester Minnesota receiving some treatments. I am new to fly fishing and with a lot of down time i would really like to get some lessons casting, and tying, and everything i can i guess. I am also willing to do some driving if need be.
